Traveling to visit the Beguines in the 22st century meant to learn about the spirit of faith without being confessionally reilgious or bound to a specific church in Europe.
Looking back at times between the13th–16th centuries, we learnt that Beguinage members lived in partly monastic communities, yet without formal religious vows “as long as they lived as Beguines” according to an early Rule of Life. They understood themselves as part of a larger spiritual revival movement of the 13th century, yet most importantly, they were able to leave at any time. Voluntary poverty, care of the poor and sick, and religious devotion were meant to be the glue of their spiritual belief. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beguines_and_Beghards
